How to Measure for Your Signature Series Breastplate
A well-fitted breastplate should be snug enough to stabilize the saddle but loose enough to allow the horse to breathe and move its shoulders freely. To find the perfect size for your horse, you will need a flexible measuring tape.
Step 1: The Shoulder Measurement
Measure from the "D-ring" on one side of your saddle, across the chest (just above the point of the shoulder), to the "D-ring" on the opposite side.
-
Pro-Tip: Ensure the tape follows the path the breastplate strap will take. It should sit above the shoulder blade to prevent restricting movement.
Step 2: The Girth Attachment
Measure from the center of the horse's chest (where the breastplate straps meet) down between the front legs to the center of the girth.
-
The "Hand" Test: Once the breastplate is on, you should be able to fit a flat hand between the strap and the horse's shoulder. If it’s too tight, it will restrict the horse's stride; if it’s too loose, it won’t stabilize the saddle.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Can I use this breastplate with a jumping saddle? A: Absolutely. The Signature Series is designed specifically for the Hunter/Jumper and Equitation rings, providing stability during high-impact movement while maintaining a slim, elegant profile.
Q: Does the "Square Raising" affect the fit? A: No, the square raising is a stylistic choice. It offers the same fit and feel as round raising but provides a more structured, architectural look that matches our 2912-F and 2912-FL bridles.
Q: Is the cognac leather difficult to match? A: Our cognac English leather is world-renowned for its ability to "take oil." While it arrives in a beautiful warm tone, a light application of leather oil will allow you to darken it to a deep Havana or chocolate brown to match your existing saddle perfectly.
Q: Running vs. Standing Attachment—which do I need? A: * Running: Best for jumping; it allows for more head movement but prevents the horse from raising its head too high.
-
Standing: Common in the Hunter ring; it provides a more fixed point of control for horses that toss their heads.
The Professional Guide to Oiling Cognac English Leather
Your Signature Series tack is crafted from high-grade English leather that arrives in a beautiful, natural cognac. Because our leather is "open-pored" and traditionally tanned, it is designed to absorb oil and darken to your desired shade of Havana or Chocolate.
Follow these three steps to achieve a professional, even finish:
Step 1: The Prep (Clean & Warm)
Before oiling, ensure the leather is at room temperature. Cold leather does not absorb oil as effectively. Use a lightly dampened sponge to wipe away any dust from shipping.
-
Pro Tip: Warming your leather oil slightly (not hot!) helps it penetrate deep into the fibers of the square or round raising.
Step 2: The Application (Thin & Even)
Using a small brush or a clean rag, apply a thin, even coat of high-quality 100% Neatsfoot Oil or a specialized leather oil.
-
Focus on the back: Apply oil to the underside (the flesh side) of the leather first, as it absorbs more readily.
-
The Stitching: Don't worry about the fancy stitching—our high-quality thread is designed to withstand oiling without losing its integrity or color.
Step 3: The Cure (Rest & Buff)
Allow the tack to hang in a dry, room-temperature area for 24 hours. This gives the oil time to migrate through the leather fibers for a uniform color.
-
The Finish: After 24 hours, take a soft, dry microfiber cloth and buff the leather to remove any excess oil. This brings out that signature "Signature Series" glow.
-
Need it Darker? If you want a deeper shade, repeat the process. It is always better to do two thin coats than one heavy soak!
A Note on Care: To maintain the color and prevents "bleeding" onto your horse’s coat or your breeches, always follow up your oiling with a high-quality leather balsam to seal in the moisture
"Our Cognac leather is world-renowned for its ability to take oil. Achieve your perfect shade of Havana in just one or two applications."
