Pro Tip: How to Properly Oil Your Cognac Leather Tack
Our Signature Series English leather is designed to last a lifetime, but the journey to that perfect, professional "dark walnut" finish starts with you. Because this leather is high-grade and minimally processed, it is exceptionally thirsty and ready to absorb nutrients.
Follow these steps to safely darken and protect your new martingale:
-
Clean First: Even if it’s brand new, wipe the leather with a slightly damp cloth to remove any residual factory dust. Let it dry completely.
-
Warm Your Oil: Gently warm your 100% pure neatsfoot oil (do not boil). Warm oil penetrates the leather fibers much more deeply and evenly than cold oil.
-
Apply Evenly: Using a clean sponge or soft cloth, apply a thin, even coat of oil to the grain side of the leather. Pay extra attention to the "bends" and areas around the stitching.
-
Don’t Forget the Back: Lightly oil the "flesh" (underside) of the leather. This side is more porous and will absorb oil quickly, significantly softening the piece.
-
Rest and Repeat: Allow the martingale to hang in a warm, dry area for 24 hours. The color will continue to darken as the oil settles. If you want a deeper tone, apply a second light coat.
-
Seal the Deal: Once you’ve reached your desired shade, finish with a high-quality leather balsam or cream to seal in the moisture and provide a beautiful, show-ring sheen.
Note: Always test a small, inconspicuous area (like the inside of a buckle strap) first. Remember, you can always add more oil, but you cannot take it out!
